Carli Lloyd has been suspended for three of the final four games in her tenure with Manchester City for elbowing an opponent in the head Sunday.
Lloyd was trying to break away from an opponent, who had her arms around Lloyd's waist, on a throw-in headed toward the penalty area.
Lloyd threw an elbow that sent the opponent to the ground.
On its web site, the English Football Association writes: "Red cards in first team competitive matches result in immediate suspension from forthcoming first team competitive matches."
Lloyd is on a short-term contract with Manchester City through the Women's Super League Spring Series.
