New Dash defenders Janine Van Wyk and Bruna Benites grew up on different continents, speaking different languages and playing different styles of soccer.
In Saturday's season opener, however, they had the defense on the same page. The Dash have been waiting a long time for that.
Van Wyk and Benites shook off some nerves throughout a shaky first half. Once they settled down it was clear they have the ability to turn the team's biggest weakness into a strength while playing critical roles in the Dash's 2-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars.
"It was a fantastic first game, personally for me making my debut in the NWSL," said Van Wyk, who came to Houston from South Africa.
